Our Gift to You All Year-Round: Fluoride-Free Dentistry

Posted .

At Gorelik Holistic Dentistry in Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Julia Gorelik and our team value the quality of care we provide our patients all year round. Because of the health risks involved with fluoride exposure, we want to share some thoughts about fluoride for our patients to consider.

There is concern about the harmful effects of fluoride exposure over time. You can find fluoride in a variety of sources, including tap water with added fluoride, and dental products such as toothpaste, and floss sticks, and mouthwash. In addition, dentists often provide fluoride treatments for their patients who live in areas where fluoride is not included in the local tap water.

Dr. Julia Gorelik, who studied with the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), concurs with the Academy which has studied fluoride and its effects for over 18 years. According to the IAOMT’s research, there are no observable health benefits derived from drinking water with fluoride added.

Another finding of the IAOMT is that people—especially children—already take in more fluoride through fluoridated toothpaste, sodas, juices and other sources than the recommended daily dosage.

So what are the effects of consuming excessive levels of fluoride? In addition to dental fluorosis, depression, and thyroid deficiency, high levels of fluoride have also been linked to weight gain, decreased glucose tolerance, increased blood lead levels in children, and lowered intellectual abilities. Those who are allergic to fluoride may experience skin rashes, headaches, weakness, joint pain, blurred vision, fatigue and canker sores.

Since 1997, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mandated that all toothpaste containing fluoride in them include this warning on its packaging as well as the tube itself:

“Warning: Keep out of the reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional assistance or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.”
